The Gentle Journey
This print captures a heard of peaceful giraffes as they move amongst Candelabra Euphorbia in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The collective noun for a group of giraffes is a 'Tower' or a 'Journey' and I am always stuck by the gentle way in which these massive herbivores move through dense vegetation almost soundlessly. Everything about their movements appears gracefully considered.
I have been fortunate enough to spend time in Kruger self driving around the vast national park and making sketches and photographic records of the flora and fauna of the region. The composition of this piece was inspired by viewing these giant mammals through the frame of a car window as their bodies move past your line of vision. The striking green plants gave a highly graphical l quality to the scene mirrored by the iconic anatomy of the giraffe. You can spend many hours watching these graceful animals interact and graze through the mopane thickets, to view them like this in the wild is a truly meditative experience.
The piece measures 98 x 25.80 cm (printed area) with a 5cm white surround. It is sold as a limited edition print in a run of 50. To find out more about how I make my work please visit the FAQ page.
